Dad Retires!

A retirement reception was held in honor of Dad's 61 years of practicing law. As the invitation stated: Unbelievable as it sounds, George has decided to hang up his spurs. Often referred to as a "Lawyer's Lawyer," George has set high standards for the legal profession and was named Utah's Lawyer of the Year in 2002.
Many family, friends, neighbors and legal peers joined us in celebrating Dad's many years of service in the legal profession. Steve, Preston, Judge Lyon, Judge Dutson and Judge West all spoke of Dad's amazing career. They talked of dad's many attributes: integrity, honesty, a staunch defender of the law, always a gentleman and his keen mind. He always wore a suit and tie and his shoes were always polished. Dad was always willing to help anyone no matter what their problem was or even if they'd be able to pay.
Dad, we are so proud of you. You have been a great husband, father and grandfather. You've been a great example to us for all your hard work in the law profession.
Congratultions Dad!! We love you,
Mom, Steve, Sue, Mark, Elaine, Anne & Preston

Sidse Rose Sprout

Sidse Rose Sprout arrived on a very rainy Minnesota wintry day: Wednesday, March 10, 2010. She came weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces and 21 1/2 inches long. She has inherited her father's, David, dark hair and eyes as well as her mother's, Erin, beautiful face and chin. We think she is adorably beautiful!

Ogden attorney Handy retires after 61 years

OGDEN — Hauling in the shingle after 61 years, George Handy is retiring from the practice of law.
A reception in his honor is planned from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday in the interior courtyard at 2650
Washington Blvd., the building that housed Handy’s office and a number of other law offices.
Refreshments will be served and master of ceremonies Roger Dutson, recently retired 2nd District
judge and Handy’s former law partner, is arranging for remarks from local legal luminaries. The
gathering is open to the public.
Handy, who turns 89 in August, opened for business in 1949, a time when the 30-odd lawyers in
Ogden all had offices in the Eccles Building downtown. The tally today exceeds 300 lawyers by most
estimates.
Dutson figures the number may not have been much more than 50 when he opened his practice in
1968. “George had been practicing already for more than 18 years then, and he was always willing
to give help and advice to the young lawyers just starting out, like me.”
Handy’s mentoring of fledgling lawyers has continued to this day, likely to survive the Feb. 28
closing of his office. Friends have coaxed him into the computer age, just this week helping him set
up a PC in his home.
“Healthwise, he’s pretty remarkable,” said son Steve, a former longtime Layton city councilman.
“He’s had a bout of this and that but has worked diligently every day to keep his mind limber.
“He does crossword puzzles, reads voraciously and engages in discussions on a wide array of
subjects. I think he’s just gifted intellectually in many respects and the law certainly challenged
him.”
“He can still cite hundreds of cases,” Dutson said. “He has an amazing mind.”
Highlights of Handy’s career include serving with Dutson as legal counsel for Melvin Dummar in his
bid for $156 million from the estate of Howard Hughes. Dummar swears he found a beaten man
who said he was Hughes in the Nevada desert in 1967 and gave him a ride to Las Vegas. Dummar
was an heir in a 1972 Hughes will.
Handy to this day believes Dummar was a victim of fraud in the 1978 trial in Las Vegas that ruled
the will a fake.
In 2002 Handy was named Utah Lawyer of the Year by the Utah State Bar.

Handy cousin lunch!

Well I'm new to blogging, so it's taken me a while to get this post up. The last weekend in January, the Handy girl cousins all got together-minus a few-and we went to lunch at Paradise Bakery in Sugarhouse. It was so wonderful just to be able to see each other and we caught up on everyone's lives-babies, graduation, missions, college, work, etc. We're so lucky to be Handys and it's fun that we can all be friends! We hope to make having lunch a tradition so stay tuned for the next date! Love you girls!

Grow Old With Me

Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made:
Our times are in His hand
Who saith “A whole I planned,
Youth shows but half; trust god: see all nor be afraid.”

Once before I posted a you tube of this fantastic and charming "older" couple that had been posted on you tube following a trip (checkup) to the Mayo for their annual check ups. The you tube posting made them quite a you tube favorite and apparently as well at the Mayo Clinic.
Here are Marlow (91 years) and Fran (88) Cowan again as they entertained bystanders at that Mayo on February 24, 2010.
I mean if these clips don't bring a smile to your face, nothing will!
My goal: to be just like Fran Cowan: playing and smiling at least to my 88th birthday as she is doing with her husband! Now if I could only get Kirk to play with me (OK, I've got to teach him first!).

Here's to you, Dad:

The Tender Mercies of the Lord

After watching this on lds.org, I thought what a wonderful message Elder Bednar shared with us. I hope that you, too, will feel of his message and recognize those tender mercies that we each receive in our life.

THANKSGIVING FUN!!

We had a fun Thanksgiving Day spent with family, friends and good food. Even though there was no mom's fruit salad, homemade dressing or pumpkin pie we had a great time. Elaine and Lexie came down for dinner and then we went over to Fran's for pie, games and lots of laughs. We are so thankful for everything we have. We live in a great community and are so blessed to have the gospel in our lives and to be surrounded by family and friends.

It is also that time of year to begin putting up Chirstmas decorations. Putting the lights on the house is not Raymonds favorite thing to do so this year he enlisted Brock to help out.
